Weight Loss Q&A

What is Orbera®?

Orbera is a type of gastric balloon that’s inserted into your stomach, filled with saline, and left in place for six months. By taking up space in your stomach, Orbera helps you feel fuller faster so that you eat less.

What are the advantages of Orbera?

Weight loss can be quite rapid with Orbera, potentially three times more than you would expect with dieting and exercise alone. A major benefit, however, is the ongoing support provided by your Orbera treatment team, which includes your doctor, dietitian, and other weight-loss experts.

The support provided by your weight-loss team is ongoing throughout the six months the Orbera is in place and continues for six months after its removal. The goal of the program is to help you lose weight and learn how to keep it off by developing nutritious, personalized meal plans, conquering portion control, and making healthy habits, such as exercise, part of your normal routine.

How is the Orbera device placed?

Placement of Orbera requires a nonsurgical, outpatient procedure that typically takes less than 30 minutes. The first step is seeing a Triborough GI specialist for an initial visit and consultation regarding Orbera and whether it’s the right weight-loss treatment for you.

You’ll also need to undergo an endoscopy. This painless study allows your doctor to visually identify any problems with your digestive system that may interfere with Orbera placement. During an endoscopy, a tiny scope attached to a soft flexible tube is inserted into your stomach via your throat. You’re conscious during the study but under sedation which keeps you comfortable and relaxed.

The deflated gastric balloon is inserted through the esophagus and into your stomach. When it’s in the proper position, your doctor fills the balloon with a sterile saline solution so that it’s about the size of a grapefruit. After six months, the balloon is emptied and removed in much the same way, only in reverse order.
